A Call to Action: Supporting Groundbreaking Cancer Research
With the unwavering dedication of Cancer Council WA, we are inviting our community to play a vital role in advancing crucial local cancer research. Mark your calendars for our annual Cancer Research Giving Day on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and consider making a donation that could change lives.
Thanks to an incredibly generous matched donor, every contribution made during this event will be doubled until we achieve our ambitious goal of $350,000, or until 9 PM on that day. This means that your support could directly impact the 38 West Australians who receive life-altering cancer diagnoses every single day.
The transformative potential of cancer research is vividly illustrated by the inspiring story of 20-year-old Tayla Styles. When Tayla was in her final year of high school, she noticed what she thought was a harmless mole on her neck. Unfortunately, weeks later, she faced the shocking news of being diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma, the most aggressive type of skin cancer.
Following her diagnosis, Tayla underwent surgery to remove both the mole and nearby lymph nodes, and she embarked on a 12-month course of targeted oral therapy. Despite frequent hospital visits, she persevered with her studies and continued playing elite-level netball.
Thanks to significant strides in cancer research, Tayla had access to targeted oral chemotherapy—a treatment that is not only more effective but also gentler than previous options available just a few years back. Today, she is proud to say she is cancer-free.
Research has led to remarkable advancements in cancer care, enhancing screening methods, diagnostic processes, and treatment protocols. For many of the most prevalent cancers, including breast, melanoma, and prostate cancer, survival rates have soared to over 90%. Furthermore, the overall five-year survival rate for all types of cancer now exceeds 70%.
However, with approximately 14,000 West Australians receiving a cancer diagnosis annually, ongoing investment in top-tier local research is essential for further improving detection, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes across all forms of cancer.
Combating cancer is a collective effort. This Cancer Research Giving Day, we urge our community to contribute and help unlock the discoveries necessary for a future free from cancer. Together, we can make a difference!
