The Legend Returns: Technics Hi-Fi's Resurgence and a New Partnership
In an exciting development for audio enthusiasts, Melbourne-based distributor Interdyn has been chosen by Panasonic Australia to spearhead the distribution of Technics Hi-Fi products. But here's where it gets controversial: this decision follows a strategic rethink of the brand's position in the local market.
Interdyn, renowned for its extensive AV and professional AV portfolio, will now oversee the iconic Technics range in Australia. This includes turntables, audio components, and speakers, with retailers gearing up for dedicated in-store merchandising.
And this is the part most people miss: Technics headphones will also be distributed by Interdyn, albeit under a non-exclusive arrangement. The distribution of Technics DJ products, however, remains unchanged, with Store DJ continuing its role.
Technics, a legendary name in the audio industry, has long been considered the "gold standard" for turntables. Despite a brief hiatus in the early 2010s, the brand has re-emerged as a premium high-fidelity and lifestyle audio powerhouse.
As we enter 2026, Technics is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, riding the wave of the global vinyl revival and renewed interest in established, high-end home audio brands. The iconic SL-1200 series, the industry standard for DJs, continues to dominate with its current model, the SL-1200MK7, favored by professionals for its durability and motor precision.
Since its relaunch in 2014, Technics has expanded its horizons in Australia, offering a diverse range of premium audio products beyond turntables. The Panasonic-owned brand now includes speakers and true wireless earbuds, with models like the EAH-AZ80 winning "Best Earbuds" awards for their exceptional noise cancellation and sound quality.
In contrast to its 1980s era, when Technics produced more entry-level equipment, the modern incarnation of the brand is firmly rooted in the premium market segment. Interdyn has been tasked with further elevating the brand's status locally.
Scott Mellish, Panasonic's General Manager of Imaging Solutions & Specialist Group, explained that this decision was the result of a comprehensive review of the Australian Hi-Fi landscape and reflects Panasonic's long-term vision for Technics in Australia.
"This exclusive arrangement sets the stage for Technics' next chapter of growth," Mellish said. "Interdyn's established presence in the premium audio segment, coupled with its specialist dealer network, will enhance our ability to provide an exceptional level of product expertise and service for Technics Hi-Fi in Australia."
At the core of this decision, Mellish emphasized, are the customers and retail partners. He believes they will benefit from Interdyn's deep specialization in high-fidelity audio, knowledgeable staff, hands-on support, and a distribution model tailored to this category.
The exclusive agreement brings several advantages for Technics customers and retailers, including a cartridge matching service for Technics turntables using Ortofon premium phono cartridges, fitted and aligned before shipping; a dropship service for efficient fulfillment; access to Interdyn's expert staff and training support; and a dealernet portal for simplified ordering and management.
Sam Encel, director of Interdyn, expressed excitement about adding Technics Hi-Fi to their portfolio.
"Interdyn has represented quality audiovisual brands for over 60 years, collaborating with hundreds of retailers and custom installers across Australia," Encel said. "We're thrilled to welcome Technics Hi-Fi into our family and continue our mission of bringing leading home audio products to Australians."
