Get ready for a game-changer! The Million Lives Collective (MLC) and the Judith Neilson Foundation (JNF) have joined forces to launch an incredible initiative that will revolutionize urban development in West Africa. The African Cities Innovation Fund (ACIF) is here to unlock the immense potential of African innovation and shape the future of our cities.
But here's where it gets exciting: ACIF is all about supporting innovators who are creating collaborative solutions for smarter, healthier, and more resilient cities. With flexible grants of up to $75,000, pairs of African innovators can team up to tackle pressing urban challenges and make a real impact.
"African cities are on the move, and so is our imagination!" exclaims Abi Taylor, Innovation Lead at JNF. "We're thrilled to partner with MLC and empower innovators to experiment and collaborate. It's time to create cities where everyone can thrive!"
Cities like Accra and Abuja are already buzzing with innovative projects, and ACIF is set to take them to the next level. From master-planned communities like Appolonia City and Hope City to sustainable initiatives like the Greening and Beautification Project, these urban innovations will thrive with the Fund's support. And that's not all! Projects like Abuja's Urban Lab, which focuses on collaborative waste management, and Fresh Direct's vertical farming in shipping containers, will also benefit from the Fund's expertise and resources.
"It's not just about grants," says Jite Phido, Senior Program Manager at MLC. "ACIF awardees will receive tailored technical assistance, including expert coaching and partnership-building support. We want to ensure these innovators have the tools to succeed and make a lasting impact."
As we gear up for the Fund's launch, MLC is building a pipeline of incredible innovations ready to reshape African cities. And the best part? They're inviting new African members to join the movement! An open call is expected in January 2026, so get ready to be a part of this transformative journey.
"Africa is a hotbed of urban innovation!" Jite Phido continues. "From transport to climate resilience, our cities are being reimagined by a diverse range of innovators. ACIF is here to elevate these efforts and create exponential impact through collaboration."
Since 2019, MLC has been inspired by IDIA member agencies to advance proven solutions. Collaboration grants piloted since 2022 have shown the power of partnership, especially in areas like health and women's empowerment. ACIF builds on this success, offering a model for urban transformation when aid budgets are shrinking and global needs are growing.
"The African Cities Innovation Fund is a game-changer!" says Edwin Muroki, an alumnus of MLC's collaboration-grant program. "By promoting collaboration with trusted local actors, we can build community trust, navigate local logistics, and sustain quality as solutions scale across Africa. This Fund gives innovators the confidence to expand and make a real difference."
So, African innovators, are you ready to make your mark? If you're working on circular production, climate-resilient infrastructure, youth mobility, digital inclusion, or community wellbeing, register your interest on the MLC website. Let's create a brighter future for our cities together!
And this is the part most people miss: ACIF is not just about the grants. It's about the power of collaboration and the potential for exponential impact. So, what do you think? Is ACIF the key to unlocking Africa's urban potential? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
