Minnesota Gophers Dominate 2026 First Chance Meet with Record-Breaking Performances! (2026)

Get ready for an exciting dive into the world of swimming! The Minnesota First Chance Meet just wrapped up, and it was a thrilling showcase of talent. But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, a little unexpected!

The Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center buzzed with energy as the University of Minnesota, along with several other universities, competed in this pre-championship meet. And boy, did the Gophers make their mark!

As the team gears up for the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships, they've been putting in the work, and it showed. An impressive ten lifetime best performances were recorded over the weekend, setting the stage for an even more intense competition season.

Let's start with the women. Senior Ava Yablonski absolutely dominated the 500 free, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of her competitors with a personal best time of 4:57.90. That's an incredible improvement from her 2021 mark of 5:03.05!

The Gophers also boasted an impressive trio in the 50 freestyle, with Morgan Thomas, Kamdyn Periat, and Rachel Conley all clocking times under 23 seconds. Conley's time of 22.99 is her fastest yet, and Periat continued her strong performance with a new lifetime best in the 200 back, finishing in 1:58.96.

Freshman Finnly Jollands also made waves (pun intended!) with the fastest 200 IM of the meet, finishing in 2:02.44.

Now, onto the men's events. The Gopher men took over the 100 breast, claiming the top five spots with impressive times under 55.5. Freshman Luke Mychalowych led the pack with a season-best time of 53.98, closely followed by his teammate Joe Polyak.

Senior Alberto Hernandez also had a standout performance, recording his fastest 500 free ever with a time of 4:19.46, a significant improvement from his previous best of 4:35.01.

And the Gophers' dominance continued in the men's 50 free, with Jacob Johnson touching first in 20.04. Just behind him was junior Ryan Slonac, who not only finished second but also set a lifetime best of 20.34. Slonac's impressive weekend continued with a win in the 400 IM on day two, clocking in at 3:53.45, the only swimmer under 4:00 in that event.

St. Thomas' Miggy San Jose also had a memorable performance, touching over seven seconds ahead of the field in the men's 200 back with a personal best time of 1:53.10.

So, there you have it! An exciting meet with some incredible performances. But here's the part most people miss: these meets are just the beginning. The real test will come at the Big Ten Championships, where these swimmers will push themselves even further.

What do you think? Are you impressed by these early season performances? Or do you think there's still room for improvement? Let's discuss in the comments and keep the swimming spirit alive!
