Unveiling the Mystical: Henri Grandjean's Magician Watch with a Triple-Axis Tourbillon
Are you ready to witness a watchmaking marvel that defies conventional expectations? Prepare to be captivated by Henri Grandjean's latest creation, the Magician, a masterpiece that challenges the boundaries of tourbillon mechanics. This watch is not just a timepiece; it's a testament to the enduring magic of horology.
The Legacy of a Master
Henri Grandjean, a legendary Swiss watchmaker from Le Locle, is back with a brand that carries his illustrious name. Grandjean, who lived from 1803 to 1879, was renowned for his precise chronometers and intricate pocket watches. His contributions to marine chronometry and the establishment of the Neuchâtel Observatory have left an indelible mark on the world of horology. Today, his watches are highly sought after by collectors, with some fetching astonishing sums at auctions.
Mechanical Sorcery Unveiled
The Magician is the inaugural creation of this revived brand, named after one of Grandjean's historical models. True to its name, it boasts a mesmerizing triple-axis tourbillon that appears to defy gravity, seemingly floating in mid-air without any visible connection to the watch mechanism. But how does it work?
The secret lies in a clever mechanism. The tourbillon is set in motion through a pair of superimposed transparent discs. One disc transmits the motion from the gear train, while the other incorporates a fixed toothing. This stationary ring gear interacts with a pinion on the rotating tourbillon cage, setting it in motion. As the cage rotates, it rolls along the fixed gear, ensuring its rotation rate remains controlled.
A Visual Spectacle
The triple-axis tourbillon rotates around three separate axes, creating a mesmerizing, complex 3D motion. Watching the cages turn at different speeds is a captivating experience, as every component moves in a precise, intertwined pattern. The high-speed rotation of the cages, at 10, 18, and 60 seconds on different axes, adds to the spectacle.
Lightweight Engineering Marvel
Achieving such rapid rotations required remarkable micro-engineering. The weight of the 3D tourbillon is crucial, necessitating the use of advanced lightweight materials like magnesium for the first cage and balance bridge. Magnesium, despite its strength and lightness, is extremely challenging to work with. The escapement bridge and the second cage are crafted from titanium, while the exterior cage is a harmonious blend of titanium and steel for perfect balance.
Calibre 1831: A Masterpiece in Motion
At the heart of the Magician beats the hand-wound Calibre 1831, developed and manufactured in-house at the brand's Noiraigue factory near Neuchâtel. This large 17-line movement features rose gold plating and traditional Geneva stripes decorations. Its balance wheel ticks at 21,600 vph, and two barrels provide a generous 40-hour power reserve.
Aesthetic Elegance
The Magician resides in a 45mm x 16mm rose gold case, available in six iterations. Two of these iterations were photographed, one richly decorated with floral motifs reminiscent of Fleurisanne, a characteristic Val-de-Travers decoration. The watch is paired with an alligator leather strap and secured by a folding buckle.
Pricing and Availability
The Henri Grandjean Magician is priced at CHF 350,000 in titanium, CHF 380,000 in plain gold, and CHF 480,000 in engraved gold. For more information, visit www.henri-grandjean.com.
