CBS News Offers Buyouts to Evening News Staff as Tony Dokoupil Takes Over
CBS News has offered buyouts to non-union staff on the CBS Evening News, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This move comes as the network embarks on a significant overhaul of the nightly news program under the leadership of new anchor Tony Dokoupil. Dokoupil assumed the role earlier this month, with a mission to reshape the show as part of a broader strategy outlined by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
At a town hall meeting with CBS News staff, Weiss unveiled her vision for the network's news division. She emphasized the need to adapt CBS News to the demands of the 21st century, highlighting the rapid changes in the industry over the past decade. Weiss stated, 'Our industry has undergone more transformation in the last decade than in the last 150 years, and the evolution is far from complete.' She added, 'It's almost impossible to fathom how quickly things will evolve from here.'
A key aspect of this transformation involves reimagining the evening news format for the year 2026 and navigating the transition from linear programming to the digital future. Weiss acknowledged the current strategy's limitations, stating, 'If we stick to our current approach, we're in trouble.'
She encouraged staff to adopt a startup mindset, focusing on becoming essential to a core audience. While the buyouts at the Evening News are limited, they are part of a larger shake-up aimed at refreshing the show under Dokoupil's leadership and executive producer Kim Harvey's guidance.
During the town hall, Weiss hinted at broader changes across CBS, suggesting that programs like Face the Nation, 48 Hours, 60 Minutes, and Sunday Morning may also undergo transformations. This initiative received support from prominent CBS talent, including Gayle King, co-anchor of CBS Mornings.
