Astronaut Jonny Kim, along with cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, are preparing to conclude their mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). After a remarkable 245-day stay, they're set to return to Earth, marking the end of a mission filled with scientific discovery and international collaboration.
On Monday evening, the crew will undock from the ISS's Prichal module at 8:41 p.m. EST. Their journey back to Earth will culminate in a parachute-assisted landing in Kazakhstan the following morning, at 10:04 a.m. local time. This precision landing is a testament to the meticulous planning and execution required for space travel.
Their journey began in April, launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz-27 spacecraft. They'll be returning on the same spacecraft, covering a distance of approximately 262 miles to touch down on Earth.
Upon landing, the team will be transported via helicopter to Karaganda, Kazakhstan, where they will reunite with their respective recovery teams. Astronaut Kim will then be flown to Houston, while cosmonauts Ryzhikov and Zubritsky will head to the Roscosmos training base in Star City, Russia.

Before their departure, there's a significant handover. Cosmonaut Ryzhikov is scheduled to pass command of the ISS to NASA astronaut Mark Fincke during a ceremony on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. EST. This change of command is another event that will be streamed live by NASA.
During their time on the ISS, Kim, Ryzhikov, and Zubritsky have orbited Earth an astounding 3,920 times, traveling nearly 104 million miles. This mission is especially noteworthy as it marks Ryzhikov's third mission to the ISS, while it's the first for Kim and Zubritsky.
The ISS has been a hub of international cooperation for over 25 years, enabling groundbreaking scientific research that's impossible to conduct on Earth.
