A bold new vision for Australia's future has been unveiled by Angus Taylor, the newly appointed leader of the Liberal Party. Taylor promises to tackle the nation's housing crisis and rising cost of living, two issues that have become increasingly pressing for young families and aspiring homeowners.
But here's where it gets controversial... Taylor's strategy involves accelerating development by cutting red tape and reducing regulations. He also plans to oppose any changes to the capital gains tax discount, which benefits property investors.
"If you tax something more, you get less of it," he asserts.
The Albanese government, however, is considering policy changes to address the housing crisis, including potential adjustments to the capital gains tax discount for investors. Their aim is to improve housing affordability, a goal that Taylor's approach may not fully align with.
And this is the part most people miss... Taylor's leadership comes at a challenging time for the Liberal Party. After ousting Sussan Ley in a leadership spill, he now faces the daunting task of retaining the southwestern NSW seat of Farrer in an upcoming by-election. An independent candidate, Michelle Milthorpe, who previously challenged Ley in the 2025 election, is putting up a strong fight, with locals expressing fatigue over the Coalition's internal conflicts.
Farrer, traditionally a safe conservative seat, has been held by Ley since 2001, but with One Nation's rising popularity and the Nationals likely to field a candidate, the battle for Farrer is expected to be intense.
When pressed about his shadow cabinet plans, Taylor remained tight-lipped, stating he has "a lot of talented people" to choose from. Alongside his deputy, Senator Jane Hume, Taylor emphasized the need to challenge Labor on key issues such as the cost of living, interest rates, inflation, and immigration.
"Immigration numbers are too high and standards too low," Taylor declared. "We need an immigration policy that reflects our Australian values. If people want to come to our country, they must respect our values and reject hatred and violence."
